About the work
The royal family lines up in a shallow row, loaded with sashes and jewels, the queen at the centre and the king in profile, while Goya himself works at a large canvas in the shadows at the left. The unsparing faces have been read ever since as quiet contempt. In the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
