About the work
Dürer’s 1506 panel turns a Gospel episode into a close exchange of hands, books and faces. The foreground inscription claims five days; the museum distinguishes that claim from preparatory work. The museum notes that the caricatured face of the man in the white cap suggests Leonardo and even Bosch.
