About the work
Raphael and workshop, 1515–1516. Made for Santa Maria dello Spasimo in Palermo, this altarpiece joins Christ's burden beneath the cross with Mary's active compassion. The Prado links her conscious, suffering pose to a debate about how Christ's mother should be shown during the Passion. Museo del Prado, Madrid, P000298.
