About the work
Titian painted Charles V in 1548, a year after Mühlberg. This English story asks why a victory portrait shows no defeated enemy beneath the horse. It connects surviving armour and adaptations for gout with the Prado's political reading of the image, using a labelled contemporary relief of the painted portrait. The painting is not a view of the fighting.
