About the work
Two men confront one another with raised cudgels in one of Goya’s Black Paintings, made around 1820–1823. Technical and photographic evidence discussed by Fundación Goya complicates the familiar reading of their legs as buried in the ground. The scene was painted on a wall in the Quinta del Sordo and later transferred to canvas. Museo Nacional del Prado, P000758.
