About the work
Women prepare and spin wool in the foreground. In the brighter background, helmeted Pallas Athena confronts Arachne before a tapestry that recalls Titian’s Europa, also copied by Rubens. Velázquez joins everyday work to a myth told by Ovid, inviting us to look again at the making of art. Museo del Prado, Madrid; dated 1655–1660.
