About the work
The Virgin holds the Christ Child while the young Saint John the Baptist hands him a scroll inscribed ECCE AGNVS, and Saint Joseph watches from behind. The rose that names the painting and the table beneath it are not original: the Prado's X-radiography shows they are painted on a wooden strip added long after Raphael's time. Museo del Prado, Madrid.
