About the work
This artwork is deeply rooted in the color, energy, and light of the Mediterranean Sea. Drawing from his background as a small-boat fisherman, Carles Bros creates a gestural and textural abstraction, aiming to paint not just the sea, but with the sea. He achieves the painting's rough, physical quality by crafting his own paints using natural pigments mixed with local sand and marble dust . Visually, the canvas is dominated by the blue of the Mar d'Amunt, which contrasts with kinetic whites representing the breaking foam of the levante wind. Bold blocks of ochre-yellow evoke the energetic flashes of the candil (lamps) used in traditional night fishing . At the center of the composition, a firm black silhouette serves as a direct tribute to local fish and fishermen, advocating for artisanal, sustainable fishing over the mass exploitation of the oceans. Finally, the geometric shapes, black drops, and lateral lines intentionally symbolize schools of fish, oxygen bubbles, and the tension of traditional fishing nets (teranyina) or longlines (palangre), visually connecting the water's surface to the marine abyss.
