About the work
Caravaggio's Saint Catherine holds a sword beside a broken wheel; a martyr's palm lies across her cushion. This English story distinguishes the Christian legend from the painting's material history. A labelled contemporary 3D diagram explains red paint found beneath the final purple-blue robe, then the story returns to her gaze. Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, inv.81 (1934.37).
