Guillermo Lorca García-HuidobroA long-beaked bird, fish and fantastical marine creatures inhabit a restless sea of tentacles, striped bodies, spreading fins and coral. Flesh and petals seem to merge, while colours collide and countless forms intertwine in an abundant, unsettling underwater world.
Yet within this chaos, two figures remain serene. The central mermaid appears to sleep in an embrace that could shelter or restrain her. Almost hidden below, a guarisapo, a mermaid in its tadpole form, rests among the surrounding creatures. Their quiet presence stands apart from the turmoil without seeming separate from it.
What unsettles us may be familiar to them. Between beauty and menace, tenderness and captivity, the painting holds tranquillity and chaos together, leaving us uncertain whether these figures need protection from this world or find their peace within it.
