About the work
A naked giant rises behind the mountains, fist raised, while the valley below fills with people, carts and cattle fleeing in every direction. Painted in Spain during the Peninsular War and long celebrated as one of Goya's darkest visions, its attribution was questioned by the Prado itself around 2008 and later returned to Goya: the dispute over its author is part of its story.
