About the work
Rogier van der Weyden makes the fainting Virgin echo Christ within a shallow painted golden shrine. Two tiny crossbow emblems identify the guild in Leuven that commissioned the work. This English story follows that visual clue with a clearly labelled contemporary 3D emblem study, then returns to the individual gestures of grief. Before 1443; Museo Nacional del Prado, P002825.
