About the work
Goya painted Madrid's uprising of 2 May 1808 six years later, in 1814. This English story follows the white horse and the bodies beneath the fighting, then compares the canvas with its companion, The Third of May. A restrained camera move holds the painted figures still; a labelled contemporary 3D display connects fighting with reprisals. Museo Nacional del Prado, P000748.
