About the work
The Dutch commander hands over the keys of Breda while the Spanish victor stops him from kneeling and lays a hand on his shoulder, a hedge of upright lances rising behind the Spanish ranks. Velazquez painted magnanimity rather than triumph. In the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
