About the work
An army of skeletons overruns a scorched landscape, driving the living toward a coffin-lidded trap, with a skeleton on a red horse swinging a scythe through the crowd. Bruegel spares no rank: a king, a cardinal and a pair of lovers all go the same way. In the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
