Bernie TorrasA Thai bronze of Indra, king of the gods, riding Erawan, the three-headed elephant of the heavens. The original figure was scanned in high resolution, keeping the cast surface, the green-grey patina and the engraved cloth and harness of the elephant intact. The sculpture now stands on a lotus pedestal, the traditional seat of the divine in Buddhist and Hindu art.
In augmented reality the piece comes to life. Erawan walks in place with the slow, rolling gait of an elephant, its rider swaying with each step. Every eight seconds the three heads look up and the three trunks rise together in a salute, while the vajra in Indra's hand flashes with lightning, his weapon as god of storms and rain. Beneath them the lotus turns slowly, one full rotation per cycle, so the whole scene can be seen from every side without moving around it.
The animation is a seamless loop. Place it on any surface and it stays there, walking, saluting and turning, at the real size of a temple bronze.
