Phygital

Also known as:Physical-digital experience

Phygital describes an experience that connects physical and digital elements so they contribute to the same encounter.

An example that starts with the artwork

A painting might remain meaningful on its own while a digital layer reveals its making, an alternative interpretation or a new movement. The relationship between the two gives the encounter its purpose.

A QR opens a link; recognition identifies an artwork; tracking follows its position.
Access, recognition and tracking solve different parts of the visitor journey.

A Painta example

A visitor sees a physical work in a gallery and opens its AR layer through a link or QR. The digital content can extend the artist's story while keeping the original object central. A collection can connect several works into a coherent visit.

It is broader than AR

A physical ticket connected to a digital archive, or a printed book with linked audio, can also be described as phygital. The term does not specify a tracking method, file format or device.

Avoid adding a digital step without a reason

Ask what the visitor learns, feels or can do that the physical presentation alone does not offer. Keep the access instructions short, and make the physical work understandable even when someone chooses not to use a phone.
